Do you know the first step to take? Do you know the most important hormones to evaluate? Do you have adrenal fatigue?

These are just a few of the questions addressed when I was interviewed by Cindy Kubica, the host of Energized Living Today.

Tomorrow on the Menopause Summit I will be interviewing Hilary Nicholls on “Reclaiming Your Sexual Spark” . Hillary has been a holistic chiropractor and energy healer for over 24 years. She is the creator of the Inner Body Dialogue technique.

Many of my clients tell me they don’t have any sex drive and the passion just isn’t there anymore. The hormones definitely change at this time in our lives and some times taking hormones may be part of the solution depending on what is going on in your particular situation, but they are definitely not the only solution. In fact, for most women there are many other factors contributing to this issue.

Sexuality and sensuality for women is multifaceted. I have said many times you could take testosterone by IV but if you are not happy in your relationship, happy with yourself or just stressed out the testosterone won’t do a thing.

If you are feeling your sexual passion shutting down in midlife join us for this juicy conversation. Hilary will be talking about debunking cultural myths and how to tap into the current of beautiful sexual energy that is our birthright.

Don’t let that “dimmer switch” rob you of your birthright as a woman. Learn how your sexual pleasure and fulfillment can be far greater than it ever was when you were younger!

I can’t wait to hear it. See you there.

With Much Pleasure,

Roz

P.S. If you haven’t signed up go to http://www.menopausesummit.org. Hilary is offering a F.R.E.E. 1/2 hour consultation to the first person that sends in a question!

The Power of Hormones: A Personal Story of Real Hormone Therapy

I want to share with you an excerpt from my book, a personal story that changed my view of hormones and hormone therapy.

When I was in my early 40′s and my second marriage had ended, I moved to Charleston, SC where I live today. I was excited to be in a new town that I thought would be open to my holistic approach to health, which at the time turned out to not be the case but that’s another story.

Events can happen in our lives, sometimes ones that we don’t expect, especially when we’re not looking for them. In my case, I met my soul mate, a totally unexpected relationship. Up until that point, I didn’t really know if there was such a thing as a soul mate and to tell you the truth I really didn’t care. I was content living my life and having a man in it was not on my agenda at the time.

Much to my surprise, while I was in this relationship, I started having thoughts and feelings that I had forgotten existed. And there were some I had never experienced before. I could feel the switch turn on and the hormones started pumping in overdrive. All those hormones that had been lying there dormant for many years popped right into action. The cortisol and adrenaline gave me a boost (they are good in the right amounts). Then all the sex steroid hormones- estrogen, progesterone and testosterone came back to life. It was as if they were saying the time is right. Who knew that could happen?

You know that feeling. You have extra energy; you don’t require much sleep; you walk around with a bounce in your step. There’s a smile on your face and you have that butterfly feeling in your gut.

It was that feel good all over feeling you want to last forever that I was experiencing back then.

When your life is good, the hormones are good and the whole world is a better place. Unfortunately, sometimes it can end as quickly as it starts.

Two years after my move to Charleston, once again the unexpected happened. At 45 years old, my soul mate had a massive heart attack and died instantly.

I will never forget hearing the words, “He’s dead Roz”. It’s hard to explain what happened when I heard those words coming through the telephone lines into my ear. I really couldn’t comprehend such a statement. My mind couldn’t wrap around what I was hearing. I am sure it was for my own protection.

I had already experienced a lot of death in my life but there was something different about the effect of sudden death.

With the shock of his death, the stress hormones kicked in and my body was flooded with cortisol, adrenaline and insulin and the sex steroid hormones once again went wild. This time it wasn’t from excitement and joy. The brain doesn’t know the difference between what we call good stress and bad stress, physical stress or mental stress.

The familiar anxiousness, insomnia and the butterflies in my stomach were back, but this time the thoughts swirling around in my head were about to take me on a downward spiral.

The shock to my mind, body and soul was so strong my menstrual cycle came to a halt. Of all the hormonal issues I had experienced, the one thing I knew I could count on was having a period. Even though I was taking progesterone, it was no match for the excess stress hormones I was producing.

The absence of menses continued until the day of his memorial service 2 months later. On that day out of the blue I started my period again. Then in the days that followed, the floodgates opened and I bled and bled and bled. It reminded me of my puberty years when uncontrollable bleeding and pain were a monthly event.

A few months afterward I was sitting in my car thinking about what was going on with my body. Along with the bleeding, I was still experiencing the anxiety, the sleepless nights and the feeling that my body was in constant vibration. I said to myself, “I feel like I did when I was on prednisone” which I had been given when I went through fertility treatments. It was not a good experience.

Then it hit me. No wonder the excess cortisol was still pumping through my veins! The thoughts, the feelings, the emotions surrounding his death were constantly whipping around in my mind. No wonder I felt like I was on steroids!

I don’t know how long I sat in the car but I was overcome with the sheer power of hormones and their monumental effects. What else gives us the power to attract, create, develop, give birth, fill us with excitement and then bring us to our knees with sorrow, sadness and pain?

I thought I knew what hormone imbalance was until I got on this roller coaster ride. I had never experienced anything like this before.

At that moment I knew no matter what I took- bioidentical hormones, supplements or other medications, none of them would be able to permanently get my hormones back in balance and help me feel like living again. I realized I had to release the thoughts, feelings and beliefs that were contributing to my physical and emotional pain in order to regain my hormonal balance and my life.

I had learned from previous experiences that if I didn’t address what was going on in my life, my physical symptoms would get worse and the end result would be some type of invasive treatment. I had been there and done that.

I knew this was going to be a long journey. This was not going to be a quick fix.

I had to take the time to reexamine my life, take care of me and focus on healing physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. My plan evolved as I paid attention to what I needed and what filled my soul.

Hormone therapy can be whatever it takes to make you feel good.

Everyday I wrote and wrote and wrote. There really is something that happens when you put words on paper. It comes out of your head, through your heart and onto the paper. Just getting the thoughts, feelings and beliefs I had about our time together and his death were therapeutic and healing for me.

I made myself move my body when I really didn’t have the want or desire to put one foot in front of the other. I started walking on a regular basis. Just being outside in nature feeling the sun on my skin, looking at all the sights and sounds and taking it all in was healing.

Then one day I put on the music we loved and I danced and cried until I couldn’t dance or cry anymore.

Having close friends was an extremely important part of my healing process. They would let me talk or cry without saying words to just make me feel better. Their presence and support in my life were invaluable.

My dogs were my confidants and they stayed close by just in case I needed them and I did. I know they sensed my pain and having them to touch and hold helped me get through the longing of his physical presence in my life.

Massage and acupuncture became part of my treatment to help me release the emotional pain I was holding in my body. I had amazing experiences with talented practitioners that were in tune with what I needed.

For months after his death I would catch myself standing in the kitchen mindlessly eating without really paying attention to what I was eating or how it tasted. I finally started preparing the foods I loved that nourished me. Many evenings I would get out my favorite china, turn off the lights, light a candle and enjoy every bite. I knew I was on my way to livin’, lovin’ and feelin’ GOOD.

The writing, dancing, music, my friends, my pets, nature, massage and acupuncture became my Real Hormone Therapy.

The waves of emotion came and went for many months. Even to this day 9 years later I still get the tears in my eyes and the lump in my throat when I think about it.

Now, I can look back and know this was an experience for me to learn the true meaning of hormones and Real Hormone Therapy. It was a lesson in holistic hormonal health, which encompasses the connection between the mind, body and soul.

It is the reason I know hormone imbalance is an opportunity for you to take charge of your health, get in touch with who you really are, know what is important to you, evaluate what you really want in your life and live your life on purpose. It is a journey of the soul.

This is an example of what I call Real Hormone Therapy. If you or someone you know is ready to start Livin’, Lovin’ and Feelin’ GOOD sign up for the coaching package that meets your needs. You owe it to yourself and the world.

With all the hormone hooplah, I am sure by now you have heard of HRT, which is the acronym for Hormone Replacement Therapy. It is the term that has been used for years when women were/are prescribed synthetic hormones for treatment of menopause symptoms. BHRT, the acronym for Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy, was the term used for prescribing bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Now, the new terms are HT for hormone therapy and BHT for bioidentical hormone therapy. Both are leaving out the R that stood for replacement. Anyway, it’s just more jargon to add to the confusion, misconceptions and contradictory information that seems to plague hormones and hormone therapy.

Let’s Get Real.

What really matters is RHT, Real Hormone Therapy. I decided I would add my two cents worth to the letter game. The good news is you don’t have to strain your brain to figure it all out. And you don’t have to remember this either because it is so simple you won’t have to think about it-which is a great thing. Who needs more confusion?

According to the dictionary, the definitions for Real, Hormone and Therapy (along with a few of my interpretations) are:

Real: the state of things as they are –it is what it is-it is not fake-your truth
Hormone: the chemical messenger-signal to cells-the main link that makes us who we are
Therapy: healing power; modalities of healing; what you love to do

So, What Is Real Hormone Therapy?

Real Hormone Therapy is whatever you think, feel and do that makes YOU-your mind, body and soul feel SO GOOD you want to stand up, speak out and live YOUR Life on Purpose!

Real Hormone Therapy is all about YOU. It is HOW your real life, the state of things as they are- the truth of your mind, body and soul experience affects YOUR hormones (the chemical messengers) AND how your hormones affect you.

There isn’t anything fake about Real Hormone Therapy. It is based on your authentic self.

It is based on what YOU want. What YOU need. What YOU desire. What a concept!

Real Hormone Therapy includes an intimate assessment of your life and a soulful look at what is happening to you in your world and how that may be contributing to hormone imbalance. It addresses symptoms as the body’s way of telling you something is going on that wants and needs your attention. Hormones are the messengers the links between the mind, body and soul.

It requires you to ask yourself:

What do I want?
What is it worth?
What am I willing to do?

What Does It Do For YOU?

Real Hormone Therapy

Uses the knowledge from your body’s messages to connect the dots between your external and internal worlds

Explores ALL the options

A unique customized plan just for you

Long-term, Life-long balance

YOU in charge

What is your real hormone therapy?

Music
Dancing
Deep Breathing
Meditation
Non-Hormonal Supplements
Bioidentical Hormones
Good Food
Nature
Pets
Journaling
Art
Photography
Laughter
Cooking…

Real Hormone Therapy is HORMONZ in action:

This is one of the biggest myths about hormone therapy. It has been portrayed as something you take or use when you turn the magic age of 51.4 (that’s supposedly the average age of menopause) FYI hate that word but I still have to use it sometimes.

Now, I am not saying you don’t need to take a pill or rub on a cream. You may need that, too.
What I am saying is -it isn’t THE ONLY solution.

Did you know just doing whatever it is you love to do is hormone therapy? It literally changes our hormone balance and it can be the best therapy.

My hormone therapy is food, cooking, baking, music, dancing, pets, people, travel, laughter, nature, eclectic interior design,…

Then the thoughts take over the mind, the body and the soul.

Who do I think I am?

I need to quit thinking about what I love to do and focus on my family and their needs.

I am just being selfish.

If I don’t do this I am going to die.

If I do this my marriage, my children, my family will suffer.

Now is not the time.

Wait until your children are grown.

How are you going to make money?

How are you going to survive ?

How am I going to survive if I don’t do what I love to do?

You repress the passion and it begins: Sadness, Anger, Depression, Anxiety, Weight Gain, Pain, PMS, Hair Loss, …

The suppression of passion- who you are and what you are on this earth to do is at the core of hormone imbalance. Prolonged suppression produces physical, mental, emotional pain and the death of the spirit.

My clients ask: Why do you want to know what my passion is? What my interests are? What would I do if I could do anything I wanted to do no matter what? What does that have to do with hormones?

My answer is: Everything.

I am not a mother but I know what it is like to struggle with doing what you love to do and what you think you need to do and I know this is the core of hormone imbalance. And I know their isn’t a pill or cream that can make it go away. They may relieve the physical symptoms which can certainly help

BUT

Real Hormone Therapy is doing what you love to do. This is the reason I do what I do. This is the reason for creating Club HORMONZ. It’s about Communication, Connection and Power. It’s about education, support, resources and services for you to live your life with PASSION and FUN!

Wherever you are in the world attend the documentary “Who Does She Think She Is?” www.whodoesshethinksheis.net.

Find Out Who You Are And Do It On Purpose! Dolly Parton

If you are in the Charleston area we will be attending Who Does She Think She Is? on Wednesday, February 18. The movie begins @ 7:45 @ the Terrace Theatre, 1956 Maybank Highway.

See YOU There!

With PASSION,

You Say
I feel like I am going crazy.
Who is that person in my body?
I could kill somebody and not think twice about it.
Did those words come out of my mouth?
If he says that to me one more time I’m going to rip his head off.
Where are my keys?
Sex, Are you kidding me?

They Say
“Mommy you are so mean”.
“What’s wrong with you?”
“ You need to chill out, Mom.”
“You’re crazy.”
“You need to get some help.”
“Is it that time of the month?”
“Did you take your pills?”

You Do
Run yourself ragged taking care of everyone else
Scream at your kids then you feel guilty.
Cry for no reason
Wake up between 2-4 a.m. even though your children are sleeping
Have to drag yourself out of bed in the morning
Exercise and eat well and still can’t lose weight
Take antidepressants, but you are still depressed

You Are Not Alone !
These are some of the statements I hear everyday. If this sounds familiar it could be your hormones. “Hormones”? “Are you kidding me”? “I am not that old”. You’re right. And guess what? It’s not an “old” issue. It doesn’t matter if you are 14, 21, 28, 35, 42….hormones are a part of you from conception to death.

The Reality.
The problem is most people don’t have a clue what hormones really are and what they really do. When hormones are mentioned people think hot flashes and night sweats or a pill you take when you get old to keep those things under control. WRONG.

The REAL Definition of Hormones.
They are chemical messengers that tell ALL of your cells and organs what to do. Now that’s a big deal. This means they affect EVERYTHING from your head to your toes. So your neurological, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, gynecological, urological, musculoskeletal, skin, hair, eyes, teeth, nails, bones, joints,…. Now, you get the picture?

Hormones affect our Life AND Life Affects Our Hormones!

Thoughts, Feelings, Beliefs, Pregnancy, Birth, Puberty, Menstruation, Miscarriage
Relationships-Partners, Children, Parents, Siblings, Employers, Coworkers Unfulfilling Work, Food, Alcohol, Caffeine, Illness, Surgery, Trauma, Loss, Death, Divorce,
Separation, Moving, Building, Remodeling AND the most important- Neglected Passion or Creativity.

What Can You Do?

Testing
If you really want to prove to yourself and to everyone around you that you are not crazy, have your hormones tested. When you get a copy of your results, put them in a frame on your kitchen wall for everybody to see you really do have a reason for your behavior.

Time Out
30 minutes in a quiet space. Okay, 10 minutes. This may be in your car or maybe in your closet. No children, no animals, no men. Write on a piece of paper. Before I was married and/or before I had children I used to love to…. Then Do It!

Supplement
Your life with whatever it is you so love to do that when you do it you lose sense of time (That’s PASSION); good food; exercise you enjoy and hormones if you need them

Get Help
In putting the pieces together so you can enjoy your life again.
If you are too tired, too depressed, too anxious or just don’t care to figure it all out. Go to www.hormonz.com and get control of your life. You’ll be glad you did.

Hey Ya’ll, I woke up this morning and said to myself “quit thinking about it, dreaming about it, changing it, Just Do It!”

The website still needs changes; the newsletter isn’t ready; the article isn’t posted, but you gotta start somewhere. It ain’t gonna be perfect. So, here we go.

I’m finally getting in the 21st century and writing a blog. I went back through my emails to see when I had actually started the process and it blew my mind (what mind?). It was almost a year ago! I couldn’t believe it! I am sure my creative, multi-talented, virtual assistant, web designer and friend, Michele, could have told you exactly how long it had been because she’s been listening to me talk about it the entire time. Bless her!

You know it’s all part of that everyday life stuff that kick starts my HORMONAL stuff which makes the ADD worse and there you have it a year later and I wonder how did that happen. Oh well, all I can say is better late than never.

In between my memory lapses a lot has been going on. The Hormone Lady has been traveling the country working @ conferences; attending conferences; meeting new people; eating; moving; building a house (more about that later); moving again; eating; taking care of elderly parents; dealing with illness, death, relationships…life. It’s been wild just like my hormones.

All that listening, learning and watching what people are doing and saying in the medical world; natural world; the consumer world and my world has me bustin’ a gut to share it all with you. Just to give you an idea of the wide range of conferences I attended AARP, ACOG (American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology), AUA (American Urological Association),WHNP (Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner), Speaking on Women’s Health, International Red Hat Society, Natural Products Expo, Women’s Sexual Health Foundation, … I have all kinds of information, products, services, people, restaurants (you know I have to have food in there somewhere) to tell you about!

All that goin’, doin’, learnin’ confirmed what I have been saying all along. It’s Your Hormones, It’s Your Life, You better Start Livin’ It! If you don’t another year will go by and you’ll be wondering what happened.

Well, I wanted to let you know I soaked up all that learnin’ from all those experiences and I’m going to share it with you so YOU can start livin’, luvin’ and feelin’ GOOD!

I will be offering teleclasses, webinars, a newsletter and of course the blog. So, stay tuned for the dates and I look forward to meeting you.

Livin’, Luvin’, Feelin’ GOOD!
